What does “Bicycle Accidents” mean?

Bicyclists like motorcyclists, are not safeguarded by occupant protection measures found in passenger vehicles and therefore they face high risk of injury in crashes on the roadway. Collisions with motorists are one of the most common causes of bicycle accidents, often resulting in severe injuries to or even death of a bicyclist. These types of accidents can be caused when an oncoming driver turns left in front of the cyclist or a driver on a cross street stops and then pulls out directly in front of the cyclist or a driver barely passes the cyclist and then turns right.

Besides these parked car doors suddenly opening in front of a cyclists by inattentive vehicle occupants, poor road conditions or defective bicycles or their components can cause bicycle accidents. Bicyclists going over the handlebars when a vehicle suddenly pulls in front of them can cause serious head injuries.

In the absence of separate bike lanes, trails, or paths, bicyclists may be required to operate on the roadway with vehicles. Bicyclists are also more susceptible to outdoor elements such as weather and road surface conditions. The most common regions of the body involving bicyclist injuries are the shoulder, wrist, and hand. Head injuries are the most dangerous types.
